Book Launch: How Civil Society Influences Tax Policy

Governments worldwide grapple with rising debt loads, prompting them to cut spending and increase revenue. Raising government revenue is critical for the fiscal sustainability of developing countries, but increasing tax rates or coverage has implications for the poor and income inequality. Civil society organizations have often advocated for reforms to foster more equitable tax frameworks.

This event will draw insights from recent civil society-led tax reform campaigns in seven countries, chronicled in the recently published book, A Taxing Journey: How Civil Actors Influence Tax Policy. The case studies showcase civil society groups' diverse approaches and strategies and underscore the potential for enhanced collaboration among civic actors, governments, and donors to foster fairer tax regimes.
